Tog rating key to safe, comfortable sleep for baby
Published: April 22, 2014

Many Canadian parents, for years, have been opting to place their babies and toddlers in sleep bags to keep them cozy warm as they endure cold winter nights. Why? Well, there’s the practical aspect: a baby can’t toss off a sleep bag in the middle of the night.  But more important are the safety benefits a sleep bag provides over loose blankets: loose blankets can entangle and potentially suffocate a baby and the inconsistent temperatures that result from too many or too few blankets can result in over and under heating.

While so many are aware of the winter benefits of sleep bags, comparatively few parents are aware that lighter weight sleep bags can provide the same safety benefits over loose blankets, while accommodating the warmer room temperatures that come with a Canadian spring and summer.

Togs – the unit of measure used to identify the warmth factor of a sleep bag – is the same measurement used across most European countries to assess everything from comforters and duvets to carpet underlay. In Canada, however it’s a lesser known, but equally useful way to determine if the sleep bag you’ve chosen is appropriate for the climate you’re baby is sleeping in.

“These days parents understand the safety issues around using loose blankets in cribs,” said Narda Simpson, an expert on innovative baby products. “But it’s also very risky for babies to be too warm,” she said.  Sleeping with too many blankets can put a baby at risk of overheating.

“You need to know the tog rating of your sleep bag and ensure you’re using one suitable for the room temperature in which the infant is sleeping,” she advised.

The Gro Company, a UK-based manufacturer of sleep bags, has been using tog ratings for its sleep bags since their inception. A suitable spring and summer weight tog for most Canadian climates would have a rating of 1.0 or 0.5, added Simpson, whose company OYACO distributes The Gro Company’s Grobags across Canada.

Grobags come in tog ratings of 0.5 thru 3.5. The use of the various bags can be further extended to larger temperature ranges by adjusting what is worn inside the sleep bag.
